Howdy. Some of you may remember me from the RS Demon project, but for those of you who don't, I have been contributing to RS Demon for over 3 years and I have been playing Runescape for over 5, nearing up on 6. During it's prime, RS Demon was perhaps the best tool out there for enhancing one's Runescape experience. However, with the disappearance of Avador, the RS Demon project has fallen into ruins and I do not see it going anywhere future.

With that being said, it has been my dream since I started playing RuneScape to one day create a RuneScape help site much like RuneHQ, only better. Don't get me wrong, RuneHQ is a great help site, but the way the site is coded makes it a "heavy-weight" site, so it may load slower on older computers. I have been programming PHP, MySQL, CSS, and HTML for as long as I can remember, and I have recently started coding a nice little web layout to host a RuneScape fansite. The layout is very clean and loads extrememly fast.

I have decided to call this fansite "RuneCommand". I have registered the domain name www.runecommand.com and I have 2gb of space available and 50gb of bandwidth to start off. The server supports Apache, MySQL, PHP, and a few other server-side scripting languages.

However, with my experience with RS Demon, I know that creating a database of information requires far more than one person. This is why I am posting this thread. Since RS Demon is essentialy dead, if anyone would like to help contribute to RuneCommand, send me an E-mail at Admin@runecommand.com. I will take care of all the database coding and such, but I will need people to help me. We need moderators, database contributers, banner makers, etc.

Once we get a basic infastructure set up, we could possibly look into creating a new toolkit, based on RS Demon.

So to make all that short and quick, if you want to help create a new RuneScape Community, E-mail me at Admin@runecommand.com. Please be sure to include a brief paragraph of your abilities and/or what you wish to help with.

Thanks!

I don't mean to sound rude or like I'm against your plans or anything, but:
  1. The RSDemon project is not dead. Well, RSDemon is, I suppose, but one of the members of these forums, Vanslly, is currently working on a project we are terming RSAngel, our saviour.
  2. Tip.it is MUCH better than RuneHQ. Not only because of content, but because it has a very good load time. I personally have a very low opinion of RuneHQ, so I would model your strategy after Tip.it instead (but that's just me).

That being said, good luck with your fansite. I would love to help, but I'm currently devoted to helping Van with whatever he may need in regards to RSAngel.

Hmm, well I didn't know about that.

I'm setting up the site to work like RS Demon, in a way. When users register, they type in their RS name and my server automatically downloads the ranks, levels, and xp values from runescape and saves them in a database. Then, users have the option to "Update" their highscores, which will display rank and level changes. Also, if a user is logged in and they are viewing a skill guide or something else with xp values, it will display how many of what they need to get to the next level. For instance, if a user has 78 mining and they are viewing the mining guide, it will tell them how many coal they need for 79. I will, however, still have the generic XP calculators for more complex calculations (lets say, from level 78-99).

The project is coming along very nicely if anyone wants to check it out. Right now it is simply reading the rs highscores and displaying them on the site, but I am currently building the database and parsing the array into an "uploadable" form.

I've made a lot of progress in the past few days. A person's RS username is now tied directly to their account. They can go to the "My Stats" link in their control panel and view their highscores as of the last time they used the update form on the site. To update your stats, simply click on the "Update" button at the bottom of the My Stats page, and it will show you your xp, level, and rank changes. Then once you press "Confirm Update", your new highscore data will be saved on my server. Currently working on the calculators and forums.

Sounds good.

Is this a web service or web solution?
If it is desktop based then I just want to let you know RSAngel is about to address this issue - no need to reinvent the wheel so to speak - but an elegant web-based solution can potentially provide a community integrated solution.. in which case two thumbs up.

It's main purpose is to serve as a light-weight 'quick-reference' for users who just want to look up a quest or something without waiting for RuneHQ to load and stuff. However, if a user is logged in and has a rs name tied to their account in the field provided, it will show data relevant to their skill when viewing a guide. For instance, if a user is viewing the mining guide, it will show how many coal they need to mine for the next level. It will also feature many calculators and such for more advanced calculations.

Once the site is stable, I will go and start development on a web-based service that will be a lot like RS Demon. While the program will be executable from the web browser, I will also have small .exe available for download which will simply open a window displaying the same page. The advantage of this is that a user will not have to visit the main site everytime they wish to view the toolkit.

Not as of right now, but it would not be hard to do it. I would have to make the control panel a little more elaborate, but as for storing the actual data in a database, it would be no problem. I could just have a seperate user:rsname entry in the stats DB and create an array to have the rs names stored from the user DB.

Ok, well the Quest, NPC, and Monster databases are now online. I'm looking for people to upload content into these databases, so if you're interested, just let me know.
